“I'm extremely proud of him. Reaching 1,000 points in just two seasons is not easy to do."

Men’s Basketball Devinir Garvey Reaches 1,000 Career Points

Men’s Basketball forward Devinir Garvey reached his goal of 1,000 career points becoming part of PCCC Athletics history as only the fifth player to do so. Dev’s dream became a reality during a scheduled home game against conference rival RCSJ-Gloucester on Saturday, February 10, 2024.

The 6’8” sophomore forward had a game high of 35 points to help the PCCC Panthers clinch a 89 – 67 victory over their opponent.

As an accolade for achieving his 1,000 career points at PCCC, Dev was awarded the game ball before an audience of spectators, friends, and family. He was also honored as part PCCC’s “Sophomore Award Ceremony” for basketball student-athletes prior to tip-off.

“The Athletics Family at PCCC is very proud of Devinir’s basketball accomplishments and will continue to support his athletic and academic endeavors toward the future,” said Athletics Director Wayne R. Martin.

“It took a lot,” said Dev in a post-game interview. “It was like me growing up to reach the 1,000 points. I had tears in my eyes and cried when I got home.”

Playing basketball since the age of eight, Dev said he “was really not that good,” until he came to PCCC. “I worked hard and went through a lot to get better and better every day,” explained Dev, who just last month was named Player of the Week by the Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) for Division III Men’s Basketball.

Anthony Virgil, PCCC Head Men’s Basketball Coach, noted that Devinir has now joined the ranks of an elite group of players scoring 1000 points in school history. (See below for a list). “I’m extremely proud of him, reaching 1,000 points in just 2 seasons is not easy to do,” said Coach Virgil. He attributes Dev’s success to “his willingness to work to become a better player each day. Even on rough days when things haven’t gone his way, Dev has always showed up and put the work in.”

An Exercise Science major at PCCC, Dev hopes to pursue a career in professional basketball, playing around the world for an NBA team. “After that, I’ll stay close to the game, as a trainer or in some other way.”

According to Coach Virgil, Dev currently is being recruited by several colleges, a couple with scholarship offers in hand. “Once his college days are done, I’m sure Dev will have the chance to get a professional contract somewhere in the world,” said Coach Virgil who had the opportunity to play pro in England after college and has made many connections through that experience. “I will help any way I can to see that Dev gets the experience as well.”

That kind of support is what PCCC student-athletes rave about over and over. “The Athletics department is really great here,” says Dev. “I checked out other colleges before I decided on PCCC. They just didn’t feel right. It’s different here. It’s really a family.” Congratulations to Dev.
