The Medical Assistant for ESL Students Program: A Life-changing Experience

Mary Arismendiz enrolled in the Medical Assistant Program for ESL Students at Passaic County Community College to improve her career opportunities in the medical field and to enhance her English-language skills. “This program was the perfect fit to help me achieve both goals.”

Mary’s main goal was to gain the knowledge and certifications needed to work as a medical assistant, but she also wanted to feel more confident communicating in English, especially in a professional setting.

 As an ESL student, Mary found medical terminology difficult to grasp and speaking confidently in English to be intimidating, but the program’s specialized language classes and supportive instructors helped her every step of the way.

“What I enjoyed most about the program was the hands-on training.” Learning to take vital signs, manage medical records, and even perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) through real-world experiences not only provided Mary with the skills needed for her chosen career, but also increased her confidence in herself and her abilities.

Crediting the patient and thorough program instructors for her progress, Mary recalls a class in which the students engaged in role-play activity to practice interacting with patients. “I was so nervous about speaking English in front of everyone, but with the guidance of my instructor and the support of my classmates, I completed the activity successfully. That moment showed me how far I had come.”

Completing the Medical Assistant Program for ESL Students provided Mary with the solid foundation in medical knowledge, English-language skills, and self-confidence needed for employment as a medical assistant.

“This program has brought me closer to achieving my career dream and has shown me that persistence and dedication can help me overcome any challenge. I am deeply grateful and proud to say it has been a life-changing experience.”
