The 9th Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition Awards Ceremony Honors Student Artists

Five student artists received prizes April 21 at the Awards Reception for the 9th Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition. This was the first in-person exhibition in over two years, and a lively crowd packed the Broadway Gallery on the Main Campus for the early evening event that featured an exhibition of over 50 diverse artworks showcasing the talent of 29 student artists.

On display are digital designs, watercolor, pastel, acrylic paintings, and works in other mediums. The annual juried event is open to all PCCC students, though most of the submissions are from students who are majoring in Studio Arts or Graphic Design.

“It was a challenge to narrow down the submissions,” said Professor Mary Dajnak of PCCC’s Studio Arts program in her opening remarks.  “We had over 140 entries,” added Professor Dajnak who, along with Professor Jill Sluka, of the Graphic Design program, coordinated the exhibition and led the awards ceremony. Judges for this year’s exhibit were Professor Paul Belci (Graphic Design) and Linda Telesco of PCCC’s Media and Communications office.

The top prize of $100 for the Best in Show artwork went to Ibn Carter, a graphic design and digital media major, for his digital work Can’t Get thRu.

The other winners are: First Place, Alyssa Hamlett for her acrylic painting Dazed; Second Place, Ivie Medina for Intertwined, a photography entry; Third Place, Lauren Lippi, for her pencil drawing Fruits-Still Life; and Honorable Mention, Emma Marotsis, for her acrylic painting, Mitsu.  Each winning artist received a cash prize or gift certificate.

The in-person exhibition is open until May 20 in the Broadway Gallery. Admission is free and the entrance is at Broadway and Memorial Drive in Paterson. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The exhibit can also be viewed online at pccc.edu/artshow2022   All visitors are invited to go to the exhibition webpage and vote for their own favorite artwork to win the People’s Choice Award.  Voting deadline is May 13 and the winner will be announced May 17.
