New Jersey’s Solar Industry: How One Community College is Embracing Change

New Jersey’s solar industry is experiencing significant growth, ranking 10th nationwide with an impressive 5.5 GW of installed solar capacity, enough to power approximately 700,000 homes. This capacity provides 7.5% of the state’s electricity through a total solar investment of $15 billion, supporting a growing solar workforce of nearly 7,000 jobs.

New Jersey’s state government is committed to furthering this growth. Central to this endeavor is a $156 million U.S. Environmental Protection Agency award aimed at enhancing solar accessibility, benefiting 22,000 low-income households. The state is also transforming contaminated sites into productive solar energy projects, already surpassing 200,000 solar installations this year. Ed Potosnak, Executive Director of the New Jersey League of Conservation Voters, praised the efforts in a press release, stating,

“Thanks to Governor Murphy’s leadership the state continues to show an ongoing commitment to a 100% clean energy future with the BPU approval of 300 MW of affordable clean solar projects across the state. In addition to the savings solar brings, it can also provide family-sustaining jobs for those who want to transition into new careers in the clean energy economy.”

Public sector initiatives have been pivotal to the growth of NJ’s solar industry. New Jersey’s Energy Savings Improvement Program (ESIP) plays a crucial role in enhancing energy efficiency and reducing costs. Designed to empower public entities, ESIP enables organizations to undertake energy-savings projects without the burden of upfront costs. Over 130 ESIP projects have been completed in New Jersey, resulting in more than $1 billion in contracts and expected savings of over $1.30 billion.
