Meet Lamar Carter, PCCC’s New ESports Coordinator/Coach

Passaic County Community College Athletic Director Wayne Martin has announced the appointment of Lamar Carter as PCCC’s new ESports Coordinator/Coach.  A New Jersey native, Coach Carter will assist in the development, implementation, and future expansion of the ESports program for the entire PCCC community.

“Lamar Carter is a lifelong gamer and an award-winning athletic communications professional with ten years of experience,” said Mr. Martin who anticipates the new coach will merge his knowledge of event management and promotion with his love for gaming to help establish a worthwhile Esports component for PCCC students.

“I am grateful to Athletic Director Wayne Martin and the Passaic County administration for giving me the opportunity to serve as PCCC’s first-ever ESports coordinator and coach,” said Coach Carter. “I look forward to helping lay a foundation of an outstanding service for the students of PCCC.

A graduate of Rutgers/New Brunswick, Coach Carter holds a bachelor’s degree in communication and currently serves as a media relations and digital strategy officer at NJIT.  For eight seasons, he served as athletic communications assistant at four NCAA and NJCAA Division I institutions: ASA College (2010-13), Howard University (2013-16), University of California, Berkeley (2016-17), and Long Island University Brooklyn (2017-18).

In his college communications career, Coach Carter has managed the athletic communications of at least 21 different sports.

He also received the 2016 University Division Rising Star award from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for his extraordinary commitment to the field of athletics communication.

Recognizing that institutions throughout the state and across the country have seen their athletics and recreation activities altered due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Coach Carter noted that offering an Esports experience “gives the PCCC student body a socially distanced and engaging outlet that provides balance with their academic studies.”

PCCC will initially look to recruit interested students, provide several sports-based event opportunities, such as NBA 2K, Madden NFL, and FIFA series, and also identify other gaming titles, including Smash Brothers.

The initial Esports event will be announced shortly and enable participant  results to be managed via Toornament.com.

Participants also have the option of using PlayStation and Xbox gaming devices  along with games that venture into other platforms (Nintendo Switch, PC, etc.) being considered for future events.

All ESports events will be free to current PCCC students in good academic standing. PCCC sSports is a recreational service on behalf of the College Community.
