What is Project LEARN?
Project LEARN is a combination of computer-based instruction, alternative work experience and campus-based learning and support services.
While this
program prepares students for positions in the office environment;
namely, clerical and entry-level office positions, students are also
encouraged to explore other career paths.
Through a web-based
management system, the Project Learn staff is able to monitor the
students' daily use and progress in the assigned skills. If the student
is not following the prescribed program, the counselors will contact
the student to resolve any difficulties the student may be having.
Components
Computer-Based Instruction
Students
are loaned a laptop with an online career preparation program, which
offers individualized instruction and immediate feedback. Students must
complete a minimum of 9 hours per week at home utilizing this program.
Campus-Based Learning
Students participate in a weekly six-hour campus day throughout the program. Classes include instruction in:
- Word Processing
- Creating and Editing Documents
- Managing Files using MS Word.
This class also introduces MS Excel to teach data entry and spreadsheets.
Students are also exposed to basic office skills including alphabetical indexing, telephone skills, and records duplication.
Work Experience
Established
worksites will satisfy the 20-hour Alternative Work Experience
requirement. Referring agencies are in charge of placement at worksites.
Support Services
Students
attend a group session once a week. Students have the opportunity to
meet with both the counselor and job developer individually and as a
group. Students in the program receive job counseling, which includes
assistance with resume preparation, job search, and interview
techniques.
Students also receive assistance with job placement during and upon completion of the program.
Who benefits?
Program
participants are comprised of TANF and GA clients including, but not
limited to, teenaged mothers, non-custodial parents, single mothers,
former TANF clients needing post-employment training and all suitable
“priority” recipients designated by the county.
Potential students
must have a minimum of a 6th grade reading level. In addition, they
must have a working telephone line in their home. All referrals to
Project LEARN are made through the Passaic County Board of Social
Services.
